You Can Go If You Are White

Most of you know that I got a job as a substitute teacher. I've been rather fortunate and have been able to work almost every day. Each day brings its own adventures and trials. Here is the highlight from my day today.

I subbed 5th grade today and it went ok. Their regular teacher is on maternity leave and their long term sub was out sick. So I was the sub for the sub. The students have not been very good for their sub and I was trying to think of ways to keep them under control. The day went pretty good considering the circumstances. At the end of the day all the students were eager to leave and trying to be the most behaved student so they could go first. I finally told them, "If you're wearing white, you can go." This included pretty much the entire class. After everyone else left the classroom, there was still one boy sitting at his desk. I told him he could go. He looked at me kinda funny and asked me, "Why did you say that if you're white you can go." He was pretty offended that I would say something like this, especially since he was not white. I just laughed and said..."no, if you're WEARING white..." He laughed and ran out of the room.
