Be Thankful For Your Fleas

My mom once told me about this story she heard in church. The story is about 2 sisters in a concentration camp. One sister always looked on the bright side of things and was telling the other sister to be thankful for what they had. Their living quarters became grossly inflicted with fleas and the one sister kept saying to be grateful for your fleas.

The guards came to gather people to send them to their death, but when they learned how bad the fleas were in this one particular area they passed it by. The girls lives were spared because of this flea infestation.

I probably butchered the story, but you get the point. So my mom and I always joke and tell each other to be grateful for our fleas. This story also goes to show that no matter how bad you think your situation is, there is always somebody worse off. This story has come to mind a lot during the last week or so.

I have a friend that I work with that has had some pretty rotten luck lately. She recently lost custody of her son due to medical conditions. Since she had no family to do anything with on New Years Eve I invited her to come spend the evening with us at my in-laws. That night we watched a movie. During the movie she fell asleep and at the end was a bit startled. I was a bit worried because at work we have learned never to wake her up if she is sleeping. She ended up having a seizure. She does have them somewhat regularly and thankfully everything went ok. Thank you so much Michelle and Aaron for your help. (She thanks you too.)

Yesterday she and I were supposed to swap places at work. She was to come to the new branch and I was going back to the main branch. When I got to work I was asked to stay as there was an emergency. I later found out that she slipped on the ice and hit her head on her car door and the on the ice. She spent most of the day at the emergency room and came home with 7 staples in her head.

It seems like no matter what I'm going through I can look to her and see that I don't have it quite so bad. And if you were to talk to her you would find that she's a happy person no matter what seems to happen. She's learned to be thankful for her fleas.
